Dark Skull (Viejo Calavera)
Tuesday, May 15 at 7pm - Ottawa Art Gallery

Bolivia - 2016 - 80 minutes - dir. Kiro Russo

Spanish with English subtitles

Broken by the recent death of his father, aimless and troubled Elder Mamani drunkenly tears through Huanuni, a small, impoverished, indigenous mining community where life is hard and opportunities are few. Given a job in the mines through the influence of his godfather Francisco, Elder struggles to adjust and stumbles across an incriminating secret that could divide the community, setting the stage for an unforgettable standoff.  A film of extraordinarily vivid and dreamlike visuals, this haunting debut feature is a darkly atmospheric study of the fragile bonds of community. Winner of the Best Film award at the 57th edition of the Cartagena Film Festival, DARK SKULL was also Bolivia’s submission to the Foreign Language Film Award of the 90th Annual Academy Awards.
