Brazil- 2016 - 140 minutes - dir. Kleber Mendonça Filho

Portugese with English subtitles

Clara (played by Brazil’s screen legend, Sônia Braga), a 65-year-old widow and retired music critic, is the last resident of the Aquarius, one of the few buildings of its age and character that remains in a rapidly changing seaside Recife neighbourhood. Now that all of the other apartments have been swept up by a company with ambitious plans for redevelopment, pressures to move out surround Clara from all sides. But she has pledged to leave only upon death, and will engage in a hot and cold war with the developers to keep a home that has been a silent witness to her entire life. “Sônia Braga is brilliant as a widow on the warpath. The Brazilian actor delivers her finest performance in this affecting tale of a woman defiantly refusing to move out of her flat while also determinedly pursuing a thrilling sex life.” Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian).
