Paraguay - 2014 - 92 minutes - dir. Arami Ullon

Spanish with English subtitles

For as long as Arami can remember, her mother suffered from epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. As the only child of an absent father, Arami had to be responsible for herself and her mother at a very young age. Now an adult and several years ago, she was able to cut the cord, as she found her own happiness in Switzerland. Still living in Paraguay, her mother is being minded by Julia, an untrained helper who cares for her around the clock. Arami soon learns that her mother’s health is deteriorating and Julia wants to quit her job. As a result, Arami has to return to Paraguay. Will she be able to find a solution for her mother in a country where the caretaking of the elderly is mainly up to relatives? The answer may surprise you. Poignant and intensely personal, this timely documentary was Paraguay’s Oscar and Goya submission in 2016.
