During the month of February, the Bright Nights Film Festival brings eight films — never before seen in Ottawa — from the Baltic and Nordic countries across the Atlantic: Lithuania, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, and Norway. The far reaches of the festival world — from Berlin and Cannes to Toronto and Montreal — have been gleaned for eclectic, dark, edgy, hilarious, and intriguing perspectives in contemporary Baltic and Nordic film. It may be your only chance to see these incredible stories.
This year's event kicksed off with a one-of-a-kind Launch Party on February 2nd at Arts Court. The main entertainment for the evening was be a collaborative cinematic performance breathing sound into the Norwegian silent film Under forvandlingens lov / Under the Law of Change (dir. Halfdan Nobel Roede, 1911, 27 min) – the oldest Norwegian film to survive in its entirety! The film will be accompanied by live music, created specifically for this presentation by local musicians Chime of Wrens & Depth of Field .
The festival itself is held on select dates in February at Carleton University's Richcraft Hall (formerly known as the River Building), featuring high definition A/V and comfy seats. The whole event is held in partnership with the Embassies of the Baltic and Nordic nations, with support from Carleton University.
