UNDERGROUND is a history of The Funnel, a Toronto-based underground film collective active in the 70s and 80s, told through a collection of oral histories from the people who were part of the scene. This publication goes through the collective’s triumphs from building theatres to becoming the hub of experimental Canadian cinema, to the collective’s various transitions and challenges, to its eventual end at close of the 80s.
"The work of The Funnel Collective is essential to the evolution of independent filmmaking in Canada in the critical decades of the 1970s and 1980s. Its support for daring, artist-driven filmmaking helped to nurture future generations of Canadian moving-image makers. This book is a valuable contribution to Canadian film scholarship, as well as an entertaining and eminently readable celebration of the magic hothouse that was The Funnel," says CFI Executive Director, Tom McSorley.
